When approached by Foreca, a private meteorological office in Finland, to do a makeover of Turun Sanomat’s weather segment we offered to do a custom design for their automated weather production. A new map design was developed in a projection suitable for Finland and with enough details for 1080p production. Foreca provided their own icons and we designed the overall look and feel to give a clean look with a focus on the information.
High resolution wind, cloud and precipitation fields from Foreca are used on the map and their data API was used to pull the detailed point forecast files just in time for production each day. Clouds are visualized as shadows on the ground with a swirling particle system that show winds above 8 m/sec to give wind direction and speed. In this example we caught a low pressure center that seems to dump quite a bit of water in the coming 24 hours. The temperature icons include a feature which will render the backgrounds in different colours throughout the seasons, from cold blue in the winter to warm red in the summer.
